- The server portion of the URL is everything between "http://" and the next " / ".
Example: " http:// www. geocities.com / jeffery_p_sanders / Cool_URL.html ". The server portion is www.geocities.com .

- In windows: Go to the Start Button, Select the "RUN"
option. Type in: "Command" without the quotes. Then press enter.
At the C: prompt type in: "PING server_name" without the
quotes. In my example I typed in "PING www.geocities.com".
- The first line should read something like: "Pinging www.geocities.com [209.1.225.218] with 32 bytes of data."
The IP address is between the brackets. IP Address = 209.1.225.218
